SEO for businesses in Moldova: the complete guide

SHORT ANSWER

SEO is the work of getting your site to appear in Google when someone searches for exactly what you sell. It comes down to three things: a site Google can read easily, pages that answer real questions, and signals that the business is real. In Moldova there are two more: people search in two languages, and traffic comes mostly from desktop, not from phones.

What Google does when someone searches

Three things, in order.

It finds the pages. An automated program called a crawler follows links across the internet and reaches your site. If it cannot reach it, nothing else matters.

It understands them. It reads the text, the headings and the images, and tries to work out what each page is about.

It puts them in order. When someone searches, Google picks from the pages it knows and ranks them by how well they answer that question.

SEO means working on all three. Most sites in Moldova lose at the first.

The numbers for the Moldovan market

Before any tactic, it is worth knowing which market you are playing in. The data below comes from StatCounter, August 2026, and is estimated from measured traffic rather than a census.

Which engines are used here

Engine Share in the Republic of Moldova
Google 89.2%
Yandex 7.75%
Bing 1.93%
DuckDuckGo 0.63%
Yahoo! 0.38%

The practical conclusion: you optimise for Google. But Yandex is not statistical noise, and its share is concentrated in the segment that searches in Russian. If you sell into a niche whose customers are mostly Russian-speaking, that 7.75% can be a meaningful part of your real market.

Which devices people search on

This is the figure that contradicts almost every guide translated off the internet.

Device Republic of Moldova Global
Desktop 76.53% 49.11%
Mobile 22.61% 49.36%
Tablet 0.86% 1.54%

Worldwide, mobile and desktop are level. In the Republic of Moldova, desktop clearly leads in StatCounter's measured data.

This does not mean you can ignore mobile. Google indexes the mobile version of your site for ranking, regardless of where your visitors come from. A site that breaks on a phone has problems in desktop results too.

What it does mean is that the advice „do mobile first, the rest matters less” — repeated in every translated guide — does not automatically apply here. Before deciding where to invest, open your own Analytics and look at your own split. It may be completely different from the national average.

The technical part: can Google read you?

You do not need anyone to check the things below. It takes twenty minutes.

Check How What a bad result means
Crawler access Open your-site.md/robots.txt Disallow: / under User-agent: * blocks everything
Indexed pages Search site:your-site.md in Google Far fewer than you really have, or zero
Speed PageSpeed Insights Low score or CWV in the red
Security Look at the address Starts with http://, not https://
Sitemap Open your-site.md/sitemap.xml Missing or empty

Each of these, if broken, holds the site back no matter how good the text on it is.

The technical thresholds, with the official numbers

„Fast site” is not an opinion. Google publishes exact thresholds, called Core Web Vitals. They are measured at the 75th percentile of page loads — meaning three quarters of your visitors must hit the good value, not just the average.

Metric What it measures „Good” threshold
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) How long until the main content appears ≤ 2.5 seconds
INP (Interaction to Next Paint) How long the site takes to react to a tap ≤ 200 milliseconds
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) How much elements jump around the page ≤ 0.1

The source is Google's own documentation on web.dev. You can check where you stand for free, in PageSpeed Insights, in two minutes.

This market searches in two languages. The same person might type „reparație frigidere Chișinău” in the morning and „ремонт холодильников Кишинёв” in the evening. Sometimes they mix them: „service холодильник Botanica”.

What that means in practice:

Research each language separately. Do not translate your keyword list. People searching in Russian use different terms, not translated versions of the same words. „Service auto” and „автосервис” can have completely different volumes in the same niche.

Check which language dominates your niche. It varies a lot by sector. Do not assume — look in Search Console, at the country column and at the actual queries.

Do not ignore diacritics. Some people write „Chisinau” without them. Google usually treats the spellings alike, but it is worth checking for your main terms.

Aim at longer searches. In a small market, „car service Chișinău” is fought over by everyone. „Volkswagen automatic gearbox repair Chișinău” is searched by fewer people — but those people know exactly what they want, and they call.

What the first position is actually worth

Be careful with numbers here.

You will find very precise tables online giving click-through rates for each position. The problem is that the studies disagree: for position one, analyses published in 2026 report values ranging from roughly 28% to nearly 40%, depending on sample, device, industry and whether AI features are present on the results page.

What is solid across all of them:

  1. Position one takes several times more clicks than position three.
  2. The gap between page one and page two is dramatic.
  3. When an AI summary appears on the page, clicks to organic results fall.

What is not solid: any exact percentage presented as universal truth. If you want a number for your niche, the closest one to reality is your own, from Search Console: clicks divided by impressions, for the queries where you appear.

A free tool where you can see aggregated Search Console data, updated monthly since 2015, is Advanced Web Ranking's Google Organic CTR. You check it yourself; you do not have to believe anyone.

Content: pages that answer, not pages that boast

The most common mistake on sites here: the page opens with company history and reaches the answer at the fourth paragraph. Or never.

The context has hardened. The SparkToro study on Similarweb clickstream data, covering January to April 2026, found that 68.01% of US Google searches end without a single click, up from 60.45% in 2024. The figure is American and has no measured equivalent for Moldova, but the direction is the same: if your answer is not visible immediately, you do not get a second chance.

What works:

  • One page, one intent. The page about fridge repair talks about fridge repair.
  • The answer first. If the title asks a question, the first paragraph settles it.
  • Written for a person. Repeating the keyword fifteen times has not helped for years.
  • Prices, where possible. In a market where nobody publishes prices, whoever does gets calls from people who already know what they are buying.

Google also looks at what others say about you. A link from a relevant site works like a recommendation.

Worth doing Not worth it
Complete profiles in real local directories Bought link packages
Partners you already work with: suppliers, clients, associations Mass link exchanges
Local press, when you have something that genuinely is news Comment links on foreign blogs
Your own data and research that others cite Paid directories promising „positions”

Cheap packages are cheap because they are worth nothing, and the penalty risk is real.

How you know it is working

Set up Google Search Console. It is free, and it is the only place that shows you real data about how you appear in search.

What to track Where What it tells you
Impressions Performance How often you appeared in results
Clicks Performance How many people came in
CTR Performance Clicks divided by impressions — your real CTR
Average position Performance Roughly where you rank
Indexed pages Indexing How many pages Google knows

The order things move in:

  1. Months 1–2: indexed pages and impressions rise.
  2. Months 2–4: average position improves, then clicks rise.
  3. Months 4–6: enquiries rise — calls, forms, messages.

If impressions have not moved at all after three months, something is not working. That is the correct conclusion, not „let's wait longer”.

How long it takes, and what cannot be promised

Technical problems: two to four weeks before the effect shows.

Positions on competitive searches: three to six months, with steady work.

What nobody can promise: a specific position in Google. The algorithm is not controlled by any agency and it changes constantly. Anyone guaranteeing you the top spot is guaranteeing something they do not own.

What can be promised: showing you every month what changed, with numbers from your own account.

The first thing you can do today

Search site:your-site.md in Google and count the results. If there are fewer than your real pages, you have found where to start.

Sources

Unless stated otherwise, the figures are measured by third parties, in markets that are not the Republic of Moldova. They are not results we obtained for clients.

Frequently asked questions

Technical problems get fixed in 2–4 weeks and the effect shows up quickly. Moving up on searches with real competition usually takes 3–6 months. Anyone promising you the top spot in two weeks is either not telling the truth or targeting searches nobody actually makes.

The checking part, yes. You can read your own robots.txt, test your speed, look at Search Console and count your indexed pages. The technical and content work takes steady time, not secret knowledge.

Check your own data before deciding. According to StatCounter, desktop accounted for 76.5% of measured traffic in the Republic of Moldova in August 2026, against 22.6% for mobile — the reverse of the global average. Google still indexes the mobile version of your site for ranking, so mobile cannot be ignored, but the priority comes from your own Analytics.

Less than people think. A site on WordPress, on Tilda or written from scratch can be equally good or equally bad. What matters is whether Google can read it, how fast it loads, and what is written on it.

It depends who your customers are. Yandex held 7.75% of searches in the Republic of Moldova in August 2026 according to StatCounter, and that share is concentrated in the Russian-speaking segment. If some of your customers search in Russian and you have no Russian content, those searches go to someone else.
