Local SEO in Chișinău: how to reach the map and the top three
Local SEO is the work of appearing on the map Google shows for searches like „florist near me”. The map shows three businesses. Google states officially that it picks them on three criteria: relevance, distance and prominence. Two of the three are yours to influence directly.
Three slots. That is all.
Someone in Chișinău takes out their phone and searches „car service near me”. Google shows them a map and, below it, three businesses. With opening hours, with stars, with a call button.
If you are not in those three, you do not exist for that person. They will call someone from the list before they think to scroll further.
That is what local SEO does: it gets you into the three.
How Google picks the three. Officially.
This is not speculation, and you do not have to take any agency's word for it. Google publishes the criteria in its own Google Business Profile documentation. There are three:
| Criterion | What it means | Can you influence it? |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches what the person is searching for | Yes, directly |
| Distance | How far you are from the person searching | No |
| Prominence | How well known the business is, including links to your site and the number and rating of reviews | Yes, over time |
The consequence matters: you cannot be first across the whole city. Someone in Ciocana and someone in Buiucani see different results, because the distance changes. An agency promising „first place in Google Maps” without specifying where the search is made from is promising something that does not exist.
What you can do is win on relevance and prominence, so you cover as wide a radius around you as possible.
The Google Business profile: what to fill in, and in what order
The profile is the main thing deciding whether you appear. Not the site. The profile.
| # | What you fill in | Why in this order |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The primary category | The most important field. It decides which searches you are even in |
| 2 | The exact name, no keywords | A decorated name breaks the rules and leads to suspension |
| 3 | Address or service area | Without it you are not in the distance calculation |
| 4 | Hours, including holidays | Wrong hours = negative reviews from people who came for nothing |
| 5 | Phone number, one | The one somebody answers |
| 6 | Services and products | This is where the terms people search for belong |
| 7 | Real photographs | Premises, team, work. Not stock |
| 8 | Frequently asked questions | You may ask and answer them yourself. It is allowed |
On the primary category, because that is where most positions are lost: pick exactly what you are, not what you would like to be. A workshop that picks „car service” instead of „gearbox repair” competes with the whole city instead of a handful. The broad category feels better and is almost always worse.
Half-finished profiles are the norm in Chișinău. That is your advantage, and it is free.
Name, address, phone: identical everywhere
Google gathers information about your business from several places and compares it. When it finds differences, it trusts you less — and trust feeds directly into the prominence criterion.
Make a simple table and fill it in by actually looking at each place, not from memory:
| Where | Name | Address | Phone | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Website | ||||
| Google Business | ||||
| Local directories | ||||
| Invoices and documents |
Differences turn up almost every time. Watch the details that look trivial:
| Version A | Version B | Same to a human | To a program |
|---|---|---|---|
| str. Ștefan cel Mare 12 | Strada Stefan cel Mare, nr. 12 | Yes | No |
| +373 60 686 611 | 060686611 | Yes | No |
| Florăria Lalele SRL | Lalele | Yes | No |
Firms that have moved or changed number in the past few years almost certainly have a problem here.
Reviews
Reviews feed explicitly into the prominence criterion Google publishes — both the count and the rating.
As for how people behave, the solid data comes from foreign markets. BrightLocal's annual survey, 2026 edition, conducted in February 2026 among 1,002 US adults, found:
| Finding | Figure | Year before |
|---|---|---|
| „Always” read reviews | 41% | 29% |
| More likely to use a business after positive reviews | 85% | — |
| Put off by negative reviews | 77% | — |
| Only use businesses rated 4.5 stars or above | 31% | 17% |
| Look for reviews from the last three months | 74% | — |
Two mandatory caveats. First: the sample is American, not Moldovan, and its size — one thousand people — carries a real margin of error. Second: nobody has published an equivalent for the Republic of Moldova. Anyone presenting these figures as „Moldovan” is inventing them.
What can be taken without risk: recency matters at least as much as the rating. A profile with 4.9 stars whose last review is two years old looks like a business that has slowed down.
How to ask properly
- Ask every customer, not only the happy ones.
- Ask close to the moment you delivered, while the impression is fresh.
- Give a direct link to the review form, not a five-step instruction.
- Ask steadily, a few a month, not thirty in one week.
What is not allowed
| Practice | Why it is a problem |
|---|---|
| Discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews | Breaks Google's policies |
| Bought reviews | Detected, removed, profile at risk of suspension |
| Asking only satisfied customers | Called gating, and prohibited |
| Reviews written by employees | Conflict of interest |
How to answer the negative ones
Calmly, briefly, publicly, without three paragraphs of justification. The reply is not for the upset customer. It is for the next fifty people who read it.
A profile with mixed reviews and good replies inspires more confidence than one with perfect scores and no response at all.
What to put on the site to support the map
The site does not decide your map position on its own, but it supports the prominence criterion.
| Element | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Address and phone as text, not an image | A program cannot read images |
| A page for each location | Every location has its own searches |
LocalBusiness markup |
Confirms to the search engine where you are and what you do |
| Directions, transport, parking | Answers real questions |
| Embedded map | Useful, if it does not slow the page down |
Careful with that last one: an embedded map is heavy. If it breaks your LCP threshold — a maximum of 2.5 seconds, per Google's documentation — load it only after the visitor clicks.
How to check properly
Almost everyone gets this wrong.
If you search for your own business on your own phone, from your own office, Google knows who you are and where you are. What you see is not what a customer sees. And because distance is an official criterion, the result changes every few hundred metres.
Do this instead:
- Incognito window, signed out of your Google account.
- Check from several points across the city, not only from the office.
- Search in Russian too, not only in Romanian.
- Screenshot with the date visible and note where you searched from.
- Repeat monthly, under the same conditions.
Keep the record simple:
| Date | Search | Language | From where | Map position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ⟨DD.MM.YYYY⟩ | ⟨the search⟩ | EN | Botanica | ⟨1–3 / below map / absent⟩ |
A one-off check means nothing. A run of identical monthly checks, from the same points, shows you whether you are moving.
What does not work
| Practice | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Fake addresses or virtual offices | Profile suspended, hard to recover |
| Several profiles for one business | Google merges them or suspends them |
| Keywords in the business name | Worked ten years ago. Now grounds for suspension |
| Paid directories promising positions | They do not influence the criteria Google publishes |
| „Guaranteed first place in Maps” | Impossible: distance changes with every search |
The first thing you can do today
Open your Google Business profile and look at the primary category. If it is broader than what you actually do, you have found in two minutes the reason you are not in the three.

Frequently asked questions
You need a real address where you can be found, or a declared service area if you travel to the customer. Google verifies the address, usually by a code sent in the post or by video. A made-up address leads to the profile being suspended.
Because distance from the person searching is one of the three official local ranking criteria. Someone in Botanica and someone in Râșcani get different results for the same search. That is why checking from your own office tells you little.
No, unless it breaks Google's rules — spam, obscenity, conflict of interest. A genuine negative review stays. What you can do is reply calmly and publicly, which counts for more than the review itself.
The data on this comes from foreign markets, but it consistently shows recency matters. In BrightLocal's February 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults, 74% of respondents looked for reviews written in the last three months. A profile with excellent reviews that are two years old signals a business that has slowed down.
Almost never. The directories that matter are free or accept you without payment. The ones charging for „positioning” are selling a service that does not influence the criteria Google publishes.
